Carhenge

Alliance Central Park Fountain
The pride of Alliance is the Central Park fountain. This fountain, built in 1935 has long been the meeting spot on a hot day to enjoy the cool mist and shade of the massive trees in the park. The ever-changing patterns in the fountain are a mesmerizing way to sooth the soul and the ever-changing lights at night are breathtaking. The Fountain is recognized on the National Register of Historic Places and runs Memorial Day through Labor Day. Located in Central Park along with the Sunken Garden, shelters, playground, Knight Museum, Sallows Military Museum, Arboretum, Conservatory, open spaces and Snake Creek Trail provide great times for family activities and education. Swimming and playing in the water is not allowed.

Steam Engine display
One of five surviving CB&Q 4-6-0’s, K-4 no. 719, built in 1903, it was used for most of its half century on the Burlington’s Alliance Division. Representative of the steam-power era of railroading, it was one of three K-4 locomotives, mainline passenger types, built at Havelock. The 86-ton engine was donated by CB&Q to the City of Alliance in 1962 and refurbished by Burlington Northern Railroad volunteers.On January 27, 1888 Burlington & Missouri’s railroad grade and tracks reached Alliance from Grand Island and the Rail Head from where material would be assembled for further advance of the “iron trail” was established here. “We are beginning to find that he who builds a railroad west of the Mississippi must also find a population and build up a business” is a phrase which became known as “The Burlington Creed” which the railway never forgot in its years of colonization activities. BNSF Train Viewing is available throughout the town, please be cautious and do not cross onto private property.

Knight Museum and Sandhills Center
This innovative historical Museum features five areas of local history including: Life in the Sandhills, Native American life, Life in the Country, Life in the Town and The Railroad that tied it all together. The secondary theme of Rogues, Rascals, and Visionaries gives you the a look at the personalities that settled the area, you’ll have to figure out who is what! Pioneer memorabilia, Native American artifacts and railroad history are some of the highlights of the collection. Visitors to the museum can get a glimpse of the life lived by the people who settled in the Nebraska Sandhills. The Knight Museum and Sandhills Center is famous for a broad range of genealogy research as most of the city and county records, and many Western Nebraska records are contained in a digital database as well as in the original form and all are available to the public. The Museum offers a large research room with microfilmed local newspapers, area authors, photos, and genealogical files. A gift shop carrying local authors and unique gifts is also featured. Dobby’s Frontier Town
See firsthand what life was like in a small frontier town in the Nebraska Sandhills. Dobby’s Frontier Town features restored buildings and businesses along with antiques and tools which are set for visitors to pick up and examine, giving Dobby’s Frontier Town a fun, educational experience. The town is located at 320 E. 25th St. in Alliance. Summer hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., daily. Admission: Free

Sallows Military Museum
The Sallows Military Museum’s stated purpose is to “Remember, Honor, and Educate”, and is dedicated to the men and women who served our country in time of conflict. Weapons, uniforms, accessories, memorabilia, pictures, and written documents are available for viewing. Displayed items and information come primarily from individuals with some connection to the Western Nebraska Area. This unique quality provides the visitor a microscopic view of our nation’s conflicts and sacrifice through the eyes of those men and women. “Old Jules” Gravesite
“Old Jules” Sandoz is one of the most famous Nebraskans in history thanks to his daughter–author Mari Sandoz. Her novel, “Old Jules”, told the story of his pioneering efforts in the rugged Sandhills of Western Nebraska during the late 1800’s and early 1900’s. Hwy 87, then one mile east on E.10th (Otoe Rd), 1/2 mile north on CR58 The electronic directory at cemetery will take you on your journey. His grave is located in Block 8; Section 5; Lot 8; Space 2 where he is buried with his wife Mary and their daughter Flora.

Carnegie Arts Center
A more traditional approach to art can be found at the Carnegie Arts Center, at Laramie and 4th Streets (one block north of Hwy 2). Three galleries regularly rotate exhibits of artists from Nebraska and neighboring states, with most of the original artwork being for sale. The Sales Gallery also regularly offers the opportunity to purchase original designs in blown glass, pottery, jewelry and other unique one-of-a kind items.
